Knit for the Cure

Knit for the Cure - Susan G Komen Central Florida

Komen Central Florida started a program here in Central Florida that has been done by other Affiliates around the country. It's called Knit for the Cure!

Do you knit or crochet? We would love to have your helping hand. We are collecting hand-knitted hats, scarves, hats, blankets and/or socks for cancer treatments centers located in our nine county area. These hats will be given to the cancer centers to distribute as gifts to their patients while in treatment.

Items can be mailed to or dropped off at our office located at:

Komen Central Florida
1350 Orange Ave
Suite 260
Winter Park, FL 32789
Any questions? Please email us at
info@komencentralflorida.org or call us at (321) 972-5534.

Thank you very much for your time and dedication to helping us with this project!

Founded in 2004, Knit for the Cure® directly benefits the Los Angeles County Affiliate of the Susan G Komen for the Cure Foundation.  Knit for the Cure® proudly donates 100% of the proceeds to support local breast cancer services and national breast cancer research programs.

Knit for the Cure® is 100% volunteer driven and we've made it easy for anyone to participate from home, work, or from school.  We ask crafters to donate a handmade hat, scarf, purse, poncho, blanket, etc. to the cause.  Our only requirement is that the item incorporates the color pink in any shade, shape, or form.  The donated items are then sold at Komen events to raise money for the cause and provided as gifts to breast cancer patients.  Our Goal? End breast cancer now!

Since its inception, we have raised more than $20,000 to support breast cancer research and treatment.  Over 10,000 handmade items have been donated to the campaign from across the United States by individuals, knitting guilds, high school knitting clubs, Girls Scout Troupes, etc.  Knit for the Cure® would not be possible without the support and generosity of knitters and crocheters nationwide.  Together, we have made tremendous progress towards eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by providing funding for research, education, screening, and treatment.Knit for the Cure - Susan G Komen

Q & A / Information Susan G Komen

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. It is considered a heterogeneous disease - differing by individual, age group, and even the kinds of cells within the tumors themselves. Obviously no woman wants to receive this diagnosis, but hearing the words “breast cancer” doesn’t always mean an end. It can be the beginning of learning how to fight, getting the facts, and finding hope.

Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except for skin cancer. It is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in women.

Each year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Approximately 1,700 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. The evaluation of men with breast masses is similar to that in women, including mammography.

Throughout the 72 years suffragists fought for the vote, they endured ridiculous arguments against women’s rights. “Because suffrage isn’t controversial now, showing people what it was like then makes it easier for them to identify with fighting for equality issues today,” says Wanda Sobieski, an attorney and the coordinator of Tennessee’s Woman Suffrage Coalition. Feminist Film Analysis 101: A Case Study of “Despicable Me”Film8/23/2010 1:00 PM
Given the ire my reviews of Toy Story 3 and Iron Man 2 generated (especially in their traversal of the non-feminist blogosphere) was largely due to their feminist slant, I feel a little bit of “gendered film analysis” or “feminist media theory 101” is called for. Many of the angry comments my film reviews received were [...]
